I’ve always found high waisted jeans really flattering. Not only do they eliminate muffin tops & all worries of whether you’re flashing your knickers, but they also give a very streamline look to the whole figure, while showing off what I find to be most women’s greatest asset – a slim waist. Plus, with the reign of crop tops not looking to fall anytime soon, they minimize the amount of flashed flesh whilst enabling you to stay very on trend. Not to mention the fact that high waisted trews give an illusion of elongated legs, and a nice shapely bum! What’s not to love?
So imagine my excitement when I found out via my weekly Topshop newsletter that they were introducing a super high waisted jean to their MOTO collection. While I’m no expert in Topshop jeans (always been more of a River Island girl, before and after I was an employee!) I’ve heard lots of good things, and having been gifted a pair of Topshop’s other high waist offering, the Kristen jeans (which I’ve worn loads, thanks Priya!), I was looking forward to finding a flattering pair of high waisted jeans to replace my River Island pair that have gotten a bit too big for me.
There are a few key things to note when styling high waisted jeans.
- Good length and fit are essential if you don’t want to look like your mum circa 1987 – you don’t want them too short, or sagging around the bum.
- Well placed details – too many pockets or buttons will attract attention in all the wrong places.
- Wear with something that shows off your newly accentuated waist – the ever present crop top or a nicely tucked in shirt will do!
- Belt it! A thin belt will give a pop of colour without drawing too much attention to problem areas.
One of the main reasons I’d never bought into Topshop jeans was the sizing. I initially bought the Joni jeans in the pale acid wash colour, size 12 (or W30 L32 as Topshop jeans are sized) to find they frankly didn’t cover my bum! Queue utter disappointment! On taking them back I decided to try the dark blue pair in a size up, to find it was quite roomy, and the 12 fit perfectly. So a note to anyone hoping for an acid wash Joni – the fabric is thinner and doesn’t give as much as the black and navy colours.
The thick but stretchy fabric of the navy Joni jean means its body hugging in a flattering way, smoothing any lumps or bumps you may have. With two high placed pockets on the back they are flattering and are also fitted right through the ankle, making them ideal for wearing with both flats and heels!
All in all, I’m very pleased with Joni and I think we’ll be seeing a lot of each other over the next few months!
Have you tried the Topshop Joni Jeans? Do you think they’ll become the new rival for the fabled American Apparel Easy Jean? Let me know in the comments!

Lauren Elizabeth Alexis Busby It’s soo cool you wrote on this! I was at Topshop the other day and saw a store attendant wearing it, and it fit her sooo well! I just had to go ask her if it was the American apparel easy jeans, she told me it was the Joni. I was suprised and pleased, its about £20 cheaper than the AA jeans and as good, although there are not many color picks. but that’s fine tbh!
also the attendant was petite, and it looked amazing on her
Thanks hun! Its my first “review” but I really loved them so had to do a post. I did exactly the same, saw them on a sales assistant and got her to bring them to the till! Unfortunately it was in the light colour which didn’t fit cos they aren’t as stretchy as the dark ones, so I exchanged & now I’m in love! I’ve heard about the Easy Jean but after hearing about the poor quality of Disco Pants, I didn’t fancy spending so much to be disappointed. I hope they do more colours cos I’d definitely invest!
A visit to Topshop is definitely overdue. And that’s a decent price too!
I always thought Topshop jeans were pricy but these were so reasonable I couldn’t say no!
thank you for this post – i love it – the jeans fit you perfectly – which jeans are you wearing on the left picture? this is simply amazing , thank you
